Some Portraits of Birds

Recently I’ve been taking more things, people and places, but my main photographic delight is in the natural world. Here are a few images to add a bit of life and colour to the day:

Initial impression of a neophyte blogger

I’m one of those people who likes to try and work things out by themselves. I hate it when other people do that, can’t work it out and then ask me to sort whatever it is out for them:

Dad: How does this work?

Me: Have you read the manual?

Dad: No. It’s easier to ask you.

Me: (Thinks) ‘Read the (bleeping) manual!’ (Says) Ok Dad, lets see if we can work this out.

Which is probably quite a common conversation in this day and age. Anyway, today I actually made a start on reading a bit about what I should do and how I should go about doing it with regard to this blogging thing. One of the first bits of advice is to “get focussed”. Hmm. Why? Life is infinitely complex and varied, so why should what one chooses to present to the world be constrained by “getting focussed”?

I don’t have any expert knowledge of anything, and I don’t claim to have thoughts which are earth shattering, or to have taken images which have great artistic or intellectual merit, so I’m writing for me; perhaps as a form of 21st century interactive diary and perhaps so that I can try and make sense of a few things and this is the best way I can do that. Being “focussed” is the last thing I wish to be.

These were taken in 2007 and as originally taken were very much record shots. I was uncomfortable with using my camera in such a place, but a teacher friend was preparing some lessons based around the film Schindler’s List and asked me if I would document my visit. Coming back to the files recently I’ve worked on them a bit. I can only hope to have done the subject some justice. Clicking on each image will open it to full size.

That’s sort of scary

By putting just a few words “out there” I have some response. I’ve made a connection with some people – 5 likes and a couple of followers in just a few hours. Thank you to you all, whoever you may be. Blundering around in this new world the sheer volume of “stuff” is overwhelming, so I wonder what it is that made 5 people choose to like my post and 2 of them to like it enough to want to see more? As a neophyte blogger this is encouraging, but as even I don’t really know what I’m going to write about…

My previous experience of social networking has been confined to forums about specific interests and I resolutely avoid Facebook, twitter et al so the whole mass connectivity thing is thought provoking and as I say “slightly scary”. I guess I’ll do some pondering and see what thoughts occur to me tomorrow.

Just something to get started.

Sometimes I love to write, but it’s one of life’s personal tragedies that I haven’t been blessed with any imagination. I reckon I could write a brilliant best-selling novel if only I had an idea for a plot, or for characters, or dialogue, or… Hmm, probably best I give up now. I’m never happier that when I’m sitting at my keyboard, tapping away, and I tend to think better then too, but what to write about? I once had to create a blog as part of a course I was undertaking, and my one and only entry ran along the lines of “Why would anyone be the slightest bit interested in anything I have to say?”, which is probably not the best way to start a new blog, but I seem to be recreating that (albeit with more words) now.

I was inspired by an old friend who started a blog about running (which he can’t stand). I can’t stand running either, but I love reading what he writes, because he writes what he thinks and very often he has interesting thoughts. If I can communicate a fraction as well then I’ll be happy. I may add the odd (as in occasional) photograph too, as I love visual imagery but have as much talent with traditional creative art as with fiction writing, so photography seems to suit me best.

No idea where this will go, but I reckon it’s worth putting some words “out there” and seeing what happens…
